Mall Food... (from SparkPeople Sat. 2/6/10)

So, today, with much trepidation, I went to the mall with my Mom and my kids to redeem some birthday gift cards for my youngest, who just turned eight last week. My trepidation had nothing to do with the mall, itself, nor for the Build-A-Bear we were about to spend most of our time in.

It was purely related to the Mall Food (enter horror movie music) I knew we'd be eating for lunch. My "diet," such as it is, has been sketchy this week to begin with. I honestly have just spent more time "tracking" my foods rather than planning really good meals for myself. So, my temptation was to just give in today and blow it in the face of the many temptations I knew I would be presented with. This particular mall has a Johnny Rockets in it, and I KNOW I wouldn't have remained strong there!

But, thankfully, this mall also has a California Pizza Kitchen, which I have never tried, but knew at least had better choices than a retro-50s diner-style burger palace. After much deliberation, I chose a new item on their menu, called "Baja Fish Tacos," and was SO glad I did! It was 2 small flour tortillas, grilled wild-caught Mahi Mahi, with a light (mystery) "Baja Sauce" and cabbage medley. To this, I added fresh avocado (about a half of a fresh one) and a big pile of fresh arugula. It was served with fresh roasted tomato salsa and blue and yellow corn chips, but I only had about 5 of those. This is a DELICIOUS item, and at 230 calories and 9 grams of fat, was definitely NOT the worst I could have chosen.

The only "treat" I had (later) was a McDonald's Fruit 'N Yogurt Parfait.

Bottom line? I proved to myself that even with a myriad of BAD choices, I could make at least ONE good one! It really empowered me in a way I haven't felt in a long time. And, I didn't leave the restaurant feeling dissatisfied or hungry, either. It also reminded me that when I eat foods that are well-seasoned (not necessarily spicy, just DIFFERENT), I tend to eat less of them. Whereas, when I eat foods that are bland or just "typical" for me, I seem to eat more, or more quickly.

I love the things I am learning here, even after just one week. Next step? More conscious planning, and less "accidents," or high-risk scenarios. Everyone's support has been SO amazing! Thanks AGAIN!
